AISI 317L ss is an alloy of iron, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. It is an austenitic stainless steel with a higher corrosion resistance than the 304 grade and has a lower carbon content. This makes it ideal for applications in highly corrosive environments. Let’s take a look at its composition, physical properties, mechanical properties, and uses.
The composition of this Stainless Steel Grade 317L consists of 18-20% chromium and 11-15% nickel. The rest of the composition comprises iron, molybdenum, sulfur, silicon, and nitrogen. This low-carbon alloy also contains traces of phosphorus and manganese.

grade 317l is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum grade of stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance and formability. It is well suited for various industrial applications such as chemical, petrochemical, fertilizer, power generation, food processing, water supply systems, and medical instruments. This grade of stainless steel has exceptional resistance to sulfuric acid, making it an ideal choice for harsh environment applications such as the lining of tanks and vessels exposed to this corrosive substance. 317L stainless steel also has very good weldability and is used extensively in large structures and small components where toughness and weldability are important criteria.
